At Jorgensen Conveyors, Inc., rush orders for steel belt conveyors can be met in as little as four weeks with the help of SYNTHESIS. Most new jobs at Jorgensen are custom orders because each conveyor has to fit into a different set of machine tool configurations.

By using SYNTHESIS, Jorgensen is processing orders through the engineering department in 50-60 percent less time. First, a basic set of options for different conveyor styles is loaded into the system. Then CAD operators are able to respond to prompts on the computer screen for conveyor specifications and options required. SYNTHESIS then automatically redesigns the drawing.

SYNTHESIS now handles about 92% of most drawings and Dan Middleton, CAD Manager, believes this figure can be moved up to 96% in the future.

Before the company began using computers, one drawing took nine hours to produce, With AutoCAD it took 2 1/2 hours, and with SYNTHESIS the design program takes 7 minutes. CAD operators then complete the drawing per customers' requirements.

"We have one machine tool builder who has 40 different conveyor designs to fit its machine models. The one we're working on now has to be ready to ship in four weeks. We couldn't respond to this kind of demand quickly without SYNTHESIS."
